Ashwagandha & Cacao Tea

First and foremost as an athlete, I am always fully conscious of what I choose to put in my body. I am always on the lookout for the next best thing to incorporate into my healthy lifestyle. Recently, I stumbled upon adaptogens. According, to the most recent definition adaptogens are a: “new class of metabolic regulators (of a natural origin) which increase the ability of an organism to adapt to environmental factors and to avoid damage from such factors.” They are plants/herbs that have been used for thousands of years, long before tea or coffee, to promote homeostasis and balance. It is only recently that science has started looking closely at adaptogens. A particular area that interests me greatly revolves around stress and inflammation. We all suffer from the burdens and ills of stress from modern day living. Much of our lifestyle promotes stress (coffee, exercise, work, etc.). Very few things help mitigate stress (meditation, antioxidants). One of the most beneficial adaptogens, I have thus found, is Ashwagandha (also, know as Indian Ginseng). Combing Ashwagandha with cacao tea makes the perfect combination for optimal health.

Ashwagandha and Ayurveda

Ashwagandha is used in Ayurveda to balance Vata and Kapha. Ayurveda recognizes Ashwagandha particularly for its building, strengthening, and nourishing nature. Traditionally Ashwagandha is mixed with warm milk and honey, and taken before bed, calming Vata and fostering healthy sleep patterns, reproductive system, and strength. It can also be used with ghee and sugar to support the female reproductive system and joints. Ashwandgaha has historically been mixed with milk prior to bed for insomnia and also during pregnancy to promote fertility.
